Pests impact mushrooms. Pests and flies are the major problems for the farmer during the summer and rainy seasons as it is a suitable temperature for flies to germinate. Due to three main reasons, the farmer has to suffer a lot.
1. Contamination of mushroom bags with different molds & bacteria.
Phoridae and Sciaridae are two major flies that are attracted towards mushroom growing bags through the space between doors or windows or tiny holes in the growing unit. These flies cause molds (fungal infinfectioncterial infectionsctions when it sits in mushroom bags.
2. Reduces productivity.
These flies sit in mycelium growings bags as they are very fond of mushroom mycelium. It eats the mycelium inside the bags and spreads the infection in the bags. As a result Mycelium also has to fight the infection in the bags and fruiting reduces, due to which its productivity falls.
3. Larva inside the mushroom
The flies increase their population very quickly, within 24hrs. These flies often lay eggs inside the bags to increase their population. After hatching eggs, the larva starts eating the mycelium inside our bags and later goes into our mushroom fruit body which is coming out of our bags.
